SUSTAINABILITY

Reduce, Reuse, Refill, Recycle

Here at The Roost we are asking all our guests to buy into the green ethos: Reduce, Reuse, Refill, Recycle.

We are striving hard to eradicate single-use plastics and all our cleaning products and equipment are reusable – as a result, minimal waste is generated. Please help us during your stay and use our recycling facilities here. There are composting bags for raw food as well as boxes for plastics, cardboard, tins, glass and Tetra Pak.

Energy Efficiency

40% of the electricity is generated through solar panels and battery storage. The rest is purchased from Octopus Green Energy. The cabins are super insulated and also benefit from green, living roofs and the wood for the wood burners is sourced locally

The Roost is within a SAC (Special Area of Conservation) and it is important to keep lighting levels very low. Consequently, there is no external lighting, and windows are fitted with automated black-out blinds. Please help keep it that way by switching off lights when you don’t need them.

Laundry & Cleaning

The starting point for all products is Eco Friendly, UK-made, reusable or biodegradable packaging. Sadly it’s not always possible to get products made in the UK but it’sgetting there. We are also fans of an e-cloth and vinegar. Fancy chemicals don’t make things any cleaner, they just save a bit of elbow grease!

In the cabin bathrooms there is Mitcheldean handmade soap – made using the highest quality, naturally derived, cruelty-free ingredients, with 100% natural fragrance. Towels and bedding are made from sustainable cotton, washed in harvested rain water and eco friendly products and wherever possible, dried in the clean Forest of Dean air.

Kitchen Essentials & Little Extras

Where possible, the kitchen is stocked with local, organic produce. Items that aren’t made locally will at least be bought from the local village shop, individual shops or local market traders. The Little Extras are all locally sourced too and the milk provided is semi-skimmed and comes in a glass bottle.

Using Public Travel & Transport

Gloucester train station is conveniently located opposite Gloucester bus station. Look for routes 24 or 33 to get to Mitcheldean. Once in Mitcheldean, we are a 15 minute walk from the bus stop. If bringing a car, we want to encourage guests to leave it onsite once you are here so why note hire an e-bike?  Wye Bikes will delivery a bike straight  to your cabin door.  There are also two local buses running between Mitcheldean, Gloucester & Ross on Wye – Route 33 Ross-on-Wye to Gloucester (via Mitcheldean). Route 24 Ross-on-Wye, Mitcheldean, Gloucester. We are 0.9 miles from the nearest village shop and bus stop (a fifteen minute walk). There will be a complimentary ordinance survey map for you to use during your stay plus lots of advice and maps for walks from the cabin.

If you would like to arrive by bike then you can store them in our secure bike shed.

Please note that we also have three, untethered electric car charging points onsite.

Climate Change

We have taken a pledge and are committed to taking purposeful action against climate change.
