Mark Harper MP makes a visit to The Roost Luxury Glamping to celebrate English Tourism Week
I was pleased to make a number of visits around the constituency last week to mark English Tourism Week, which took place from 22-31 May. One of the tourism businesses I visited was The Roost Luxury Glamping near Mitcheldean.
The Roost consists of two glamping cabins, set in 2.5 acres of meadow, within a Special Area of Conservation. The business is a champion for sustainability, providing a short break that has low impact on the local environment. Food waste is composted, all kitchen essentials are locally sourced and there is an electric car charging point on site.
I am pictured with Lorraine Robinson, owner of The Roost, who recently won Gold in the South West England, Tourism Excellence Awards for Best New Tourism Business.
I look forward to seeing this local, sustainable business continuing to grow in the future. Further details about The Roost can be found on their website: www.theroostglamping.co.uk.
I know just how vital tourism is to the Forest of Dean and I want to see the sector make a full return as soon and as safely as possible so that those who rely on it can get fully back to work.
Covid has made things incredibly tough for this sector. As their local MP, I have been working very hard to have their back throughout this crisis.
In the Forest, I have been holding regular virtual meetings with local tourism businesses large and small, getting their feedback on how effective the financial support packages were.
In Westminster, I have been personally pushing for support for this sector with Ministers right up to the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, who stepped up and delivered through his Budgets.
As well as the furlough and self-employed grant schemes, the hospitality, leisure and tourism sector has also received dedicated support through grants and VAT cuts as they were particularly vulnerable through lockdowns.
