Enjoy cooking on the Fire Bowl
There’s a certain kind of alchemy that happens when you gather around a fire. The flicker of flames, the scent of woodsmoke and the sizzle of something delicious being cooked under open sky. A fire bowl doesn’t just cook your food — it invites you to slow down, connect, and rediscover your inner caveman.
Luckily, here at The Roost we have willow diners, each with their own fire bowl and outdoor dining furniture.
Why We Love Fire Bowl Feasting
Forget the perfectly controlled gas grill or the oven timer’s beep. Cooking on a fire bowl is instinctive, intuitive — part cooking, part craft. You feed the fire, you wait, you watch. It’s a slower way to cook, and that’s exactly the point.
It’s all about the embers – Let the wood burn down before you cook. The magic happens in the glow, not the flames.
Flavour by nature – Cooking with local Birchwood single species charcoal adds a depth of flavour and smokiness that cannot be matched.
It sets the scene – The fire becomes the heart of the evening, drawing you close to the warmth & glow.
Four Easy Fire Bowl Recipes to Try
You don’t need chef’s whites or complex kit. Just a few simple ingredients, some patience, and a little willingness to get smoke in your hair.
1. Whiskey Maple Chicken Skewers
Sticky, smoky, and just the right side of wild.
What you’ll need:
Chicken thighs (they stay juicy), a glug of maple syrup, a splash of whiskey (or apple juice), soy sauce, and chili flakes.
How to cook:
Marinate it all for 30 mins. Skewer and grill over glowing coals, turning until caramelised and golden.
2. Ember-Grilled Veg with Herb Oil
A rainbow of flavour and fire-charred edges.
Slice courgettes, peppers, red onion, and mushrooms. Toss them in olive oil, crushed garlic, rosemary and sea salt. Cook on a cast iron plate or straight on the grill. Drizzle with lemony herb oil to finish. Eat with your fingers.
3. Campfire Steaks with Garlic Butter
For when the evening demands something hearty and primal. Why not try this with Plumphill Farm Lamb or Pork Chops? Just remember or order a BBQ pack for your stay:
How to cook:
Sear a thick-cut steak directly over the hottest embers. A couple of minutes each side, then rest it on the edge of the fire bowl while you add a melting pat of garlic butter.
If you’ve ordered a Plumphill Farm BBQ pack, you’ll enjoy cooking up the yummy burgers and sausages too. They’re the best!

Don’t Forget Dessert
Banana Boats – Slice down the middle of a banana (leave the skin on), fill with chocolate chunks and marshmallows, wrap in foil, and let it soften in the embers. Unwrap carefully. Share (or don’t).
The Beauty of Imperfection
Fire bowl cooking isn’t about precision – Things might char a little, or take longer than expected. That’s okay. You’re not trying to win MasterChef. Under open sky. By firelight. Surrounded by trees, birdsong, and the promise of second helpings.
